Premier League ready FIFA response to fix Man Utd, Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea row

The Premier League are preparing to hit back at FIFA’s controversial five-day ban on players who were withdrawn from international duty this week, according to reports. Players from Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are all set to miss domestic fixtures as the fall-out between clubs and international football associations continues.

Several South American FAs have asked FIFA to impose a five-day ban which would prevent some Premier League clubs from fielding certain players in upcoming domestic matches.

The Brazilian FA have requested that Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino miss Liverpool’s fixtures across the next five days.

That would include Sunday’s clash with Leeds, for whom winger Raphinha will not be allowed to play either.

It will also affect Ederson and Gabriel Jesus at Man City, Thiago Silva of Chelsea, and Man Utd’s Fred.

The Argentinian FA have also complained to FIFA, which will leave Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso missing Tottenham’s match against Crystal Palace at the weekend, while Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia will be unavailable for Aston Villa.

The same rule will also apply to Wolves striker Raul Jimenez, Watford’s Francisco Sierralta, Newcastle playmaker Miguel Almiron and the Blackburn striker Ben Brereton Diaz after the federations of Mexico, Paraguay and Chile made clear their own displeasure.

But, according to Goal, the Premier League is set to intervene and are keen to find a resolution. Clubs did not want players to travel to red-list countries as government rules mean that anyone who does must quarantine in a ‘managed quarantine hotel’ upon their return.

It is a situation that is perhaps made even more baffling by the fact that the Brazilian FA are believed to be happy for Richarlison to feature for Everton.

ANVISA personnel stormed the pitch to detain the pair and Villa’s Martinez and Buendia, insisting that the quartet had lied about not being in the United Kingdom within 10 days of their arrival in Brazil.

The UK is a red-list country in Brazil and individuals who have been in the UK within 10 days of entering the country must quarantine for two weeks.

“It’s a big problem, not only for our players, but for all the South American players playing in the Premier League because they have to obey the government law,” Nuno told Sky Sports on August 30.

“But we must be aware that saying no to a national team is very difficult. We will see how things go but we are here to look after our players, and we will do our best to manage the situation.

“Our position is clear: as a club we don’t approve the situation, so what we want is a solution for everybody, because this will be a big problem, not only for this international break, we have one in one month’s time, two months’ time. And we must find a solution because we cannot stay without our players.

“At the same time, national teams demand, so it’s a difficult situation, that we expect solutions, or at least some answers.”

FIFA’s rules state that teams who field players who are supposed to be serving a five-day suspension must forfeit their match and it be recorded as a 3-0 defeat. Players can also be sanctioned for taking part.
