A touching scene from William’s unofficial biography reports that the 10-year-old tried to help his mother feel better after he heard her crying in the locked bathroom. In Prince William: Born to be King: An intimate portrait, royal expert Penny Junor writes that following an altercation with Charles, Princess Diana ran to her bathroom in tears.

Their son William, 10, pushed tissues under the door for her.

He then said: “I hate to see you sad.”

The Duke of Cambridge was only 15 years old when he lost his mother to a terrible accident in Paris on 31 August 1997.

Penny Junor actually writes in her book that he “knew something awful was going to happen” as he was staying in Balmoral castle with his younger brother and royal nanny Tiggy.

According to the biographer, the teenager went for long walks alone on the castle grounds after the tragedy.

In an interview aired during the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Prince William said the years following his mother’s death were spent keeping busy.

“Slowly, you try to rebuild your life, you try to understand what happened,” he said.

“I kept myself busy, as well, to allow you to get yourself through that initial shock phase.

“Time makes it easier, he told the grieving boy.

    “I know how you feel.

“I still miss my mother every day, and it’s 20 years after she died.”
