    Rachel Weisz has lined up her next film project, signing on to star in an adaptation of Seance on a Wet Afternoon for Legendary Pictures.

    The 51-year- old actress will both star in and produce the adaptation, which Tomas Alfredson (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) has been set to direct, via Deadline.

    Alfredson replaces Harry Bradbeer at the helm, who left the helm to direct Netflix’s Enola Holmes sequel, though he will stay on as executive producer.

    Seance on a Wet Afternoon was written by Marc McShane and published in 1961, following a self-proclaimed psychic medium.

    She convinces her husband to kidnap a child so she can help the police solve the crime, but her husband realizes her plan threatens them both.

    The novel was adapted in the 1964 film of the same name, starring Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough as the married couple.

    Both earned BAFTA nominations for their performances, with Stanley earning an Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards.

    Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes, The Aeronauts) wrote the screenplay from a story he concocted with Bradbeer that is adapted from the novel.

    Robyn Slovo will also produce with Emma Forbes, and Michael Attenborough along with Legendary Pictures.

    Weisz’s producing partner Polly Stokes will serve as an executive producer through their Apetite Pictures company. 

    Writer Thorne will also an executive producer on the project, though it’s unclear when production may begin on the project.

    Weisz is coming off her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Melina in Black Widow, which debuted this summer.

    She also recently wrapped a gender-swapped adaptation of David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller Dead Ringers for Amazon, which she is starring in and producing.

    She is also attached to star in Todd Solondz’s dramatic comedy Love Child, reuniting with her co-star from The Lobster, Colin Farrell.

    Seance on a Wet Afternoon is Alfredson’s first English-language feature since 2017’s The Snowman, though he directed the Swedish remake Se upp för Jönssonligan in 2020.
