Emma and Jack are the couple behind Renovating the Broadway, a platform where they share the details of their renovation. The couple is updating a rundown 1930s semi, including a kitchen extension.

The couple was quoted around £800 to build the storage, but decided to do it themselves.

Emma claimed the couple saved £500 with their DIY strategy.

How did the couple make their DIY alcove shelves?

The couple used a circular saw, a mitre saw, a tape measure, spirit level, power drill and sandpaper.

They created the base and frame with timber and used MDF to finish the base, build a shelf, cover the top, and box the timber frame in.

They needed to purchase door handles, wood filler, glue and primer, skirting for the bottom and the paint colour they wanted the alcove shelves to be.

The couple started with the base for their alcoves, made with a rectangular piece of timber.

Next, they built a frame for the cupboard at the lower part of their shelves and attached their cupboard doors.

They then fitted MDF shelves in the alcoves above the cupboard.

“It is quite time-consuming,” Emma said. A full rundown of Emma and Jack’s exact steps feature on the couple’s blog.

Emma and Jack saved thousands of pounds on their property extension. The couple has extended their kitchen and urged Britons to think about one vital tip when approaching a renovation.

The couple spent all their savings on the house.

Emma explained: “We saved up a lot and we took out a second mortgage for a chunk of the building work. We’ll be able to remortgage in a year’s time and consolidate it.”

She urged those planning an extension to see as many builders as possible – even if they have a recommendation.
