Royal Family LIVE: Prince Harry WON'T pick Prince William as godfather – 'Wants a mentor'

Prince Harry ‘told Queen he’d name child after her’ says expert

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born at 11.40am on Friday, June 4, at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, weighing 7lb 11oz. She was named after the Queen’s family nickname and also Harry’s mother Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997.

Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, have sent a gift for their niece and Queen Elizabeth II has received some photos of the newborn.

However, amid an ongoing rift between Harry and his brother, royal experts have claimed William will not be the godfather to Lilibet.

Daisy McAndrew, NBC royal commentator and journalist, said: “Lots of rumours about who the godparents are going to be, and I can tell you it won’t be William.

“Now that’s because the royals don’t do siblings as godparents.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did not select Harry to be godfather to any of their three children but instead picked a mix of family and friends.

For Harry and Meghan’s first child, Archie, they have not formally announced who is his godparents.

But there are rumours it is Harry and William’s old nanny and one of Harry’s mentors.

Ms McAndrew continued: “I think when you look back at whom they chose for Archie, these were the old nanny, the old father figure, very British people.

“And I suspect this time around they’ll be full of Americans, and I think that’ll be yet another departure from their old life to their new life.”

Marlene Koenig, a second royal expert, echoed Ms McAndrew’s comments and said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will choose “mentors” as the godparents.

She said: “You’re more likely to have a relationship with your godparent if they’re close friends with the family.

“I think they’ll choose people who will have roles in their lives as mentors, as adopted uncles, as friends.”

Ms Koenig claimed if either the Duke of Duchess of Cambridge were named as godparents it would “send tongues wagging”.

She continued: “That would send tongues wagging.

“But it would also perhaps be a good way to begin the healing of tension between the two brothers right now.”

The new baby is the Queen’s 11th great-grandchild, and the first to be born since Philip’s death.

As the couple relocated to California after stepping down as members of the Royal Family it is not known when or if the Queen will meet her great-grandchild.
