Known as the Queen’s holiday residence, Balmoral castle is also a tourist attraction that offers everything from guided tours and coffee to a gift shop for royal fans. From Saturday 9 October, the castle will open its doors for a new session of tours until Sunday 7 November.

The lucky visitors won’t be able to meet the Queen as she left Balmoral a few weeks ago as usual, but they will have the opportunity to buy the vegetables that grew on her royal grounds.

As announced by Balmoral castle themselves online on Thursday, a £10 selection of vegetables will be available at the gift shop from 9 October.

Royal potatoes, apples, beetroots and other regal squash will please the monarchy enthusiasts visiting.

“Limited quantity available and selection may vary,” reads the caption.

After this last session of visits, the castle will be closed to the public until April 2022 except for its takeaway coffee pod and gate lodge shop which will remain open 7 days a week.

The person responsible for the vegetable garden was actually the late Prince Philip himself.

The Duke of Edinburgh is said to have taken an “active role” in managing the estate over the years, the royal family’s website explains.

He created the large vegetable garden, a flowered paved walk, a water garden and the plantation of oak trees.

“In the days before the Royal Yacht was decommissioned, she would sail the west coast of Scotland, but not a summer has gone by throughout her reign when she has not spent the long summer breaks in Balmoral.”

Balmoral Castle has been the royal family’s retreat ever since it was bought for Queen Victoria more than 160 years ago.
