Sam went on to say how he was also impressed by Jana’s performance on the show.

‘Jana is one of the most amazing women I’ve met in my life. I don’t say that lightly. She’s phenomenal,’ he said.

‘You know her achievements as an athlete and academically, as well as raising her family. And you can see on the show that she’s so compassionate. And she’s very competitive. I got on extremely well with Jana,’ he added.

Since retiring from sport, Jana has become a medical practitioner and is working in the emergency department at Sydney’s Blacktown Hospital.

Jana and Sam are competing on SAS Australia alongside Mark Philippoussis, Dan Ewing and John Steffensen.

During Tuesday’s episode of the show, the retired NRL star made a bombshell confession about his tumultuous marriage to ex-wife Phoebe during a discussion with Jana.

Sam admitted they were ‘just not meant for each other’ and says he ‘forced things’ because he desperately wanted a family.

The 32-year-old and Phoebe were married for four years and had daughter Poppy, four, and son Billy, two, together before splitting in 2019.

After Jana asks how they met, Sam responds: ‘At a concert, and I never go to concerts. We were just not meant for each other’.

Sam said he pursued the relationship with Phoebe, 32, despite his concerns because he wanted to live the dream life.

‘I was trying to force things – I wanted a family, I wanted kids, I wanted the dream, the house… I got it, had it all,’ he says in the shock episode.

‘There were a few things I knew weren’t quite right, but I thought I could change that and help that, mend that… I couldn’t do it.’
