Music producer claims he ‘made’ Silverchair’s debut album Frogstomp because Daniel Johns and his fellow band members were just 14 at the time: ‘It was my baby, as well as theirs’

A veteran music producer has made a series of bold claims in regard to the creation of Aussie rock band Silverchair’s debut album, Frogstomp.

Kevin ‘Caveman’ Shirley says he ‘made’ Frogstomp and it was his ‘baby’ because frontman Daniel Johns and his fellow band members were just 14 at the time.

Shirley’s claims, which Johns rejects, were made during a discussion about the band’s origins in the new podcast about the singer’s life titled Who is Daniel Johns?

‘I definitely felt like I made the record,’ Shirley said of Frogstomp. ‘Not that I played it, but that I made the record. It was my baby, as well as theirs.’

Johns disagreed, saying he views the creation of the band’s debut album differently.

‘I don’t think that’s completely fair,’ he responded.

However, Johns did acknowledge the band had ‘structural difficulties’ stemming from their youth and inexperience, meaning Shirley’s help was invaluable.

‘I was just starting to learn to write songs and he helped consolidate,’ Johns said. ‘To his credit, I remember at the end of each production session [he would say], “These songs sound better now.”‘

The podcast interviewer agreed with Johns that Shirley’s role was that of a producer.

‘Yeah, particularly if you’re 14,’ Johns replied. ‘We were kids and we didn’t know how to make a record; we just wanted to make loud music.

‘And he did turn it into an album, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say he made the album. He made it sound great.’

Frogstomp was a huge success and featured the band’s first hit single, Tomorrow.

Shirley was later dropped for Silverchair’s sophomore album, Freak Show.
