Singer-songwriter Andrea Martin – who wrote songs for Monica, En Vogue and SWV – passes away at 49

    The music world is in mourning with news of the passing of singer-songwriter Andrea Martin at just 49 years of age.

    While no cause of death was given, her death was confirmed on her Instagram story on Monday. 

    She was best known as a songwriter, penning hit tracks for Monica, En Vouge, SWV, Angie Stone and Leona Lewis, to name just a few.

    ‘Andrea will always be remembered for her passion and dedication to her family and friends. Her impact will continue to be felt and heard for a lifetime,’ the statement continued.

    ‘We thank you in advance for your condolences, love, compassion and understanding during this time,’ they added.

    Martin was born April 14, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York City, and graduated from the prestigious Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in 1990, the school that the hit movie Fame was based on.

    Her first hit was Monica’s 1995 song Before You Walk Out Of My Life, which she co-wrote with Carsten Schack and Kenneth Karlin, which hit #1 on the R&B charts and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts.

    She frequently collaborated with her LaGuardia classmate Ivan Matias on songs such as SVW’s You’re The One, which topped the R&B charts and rose to #5 on the Hot 100, and En Vogue’s Don’t Let Go (Love), which topped the R&B charts and hit #2 on the Hot 100.

    Other notable tracks include I Miss Me Some Him by Toni Braxton, Wish I Didn’t Miss You by Angie Stone, Better In Time by Leona Lewis and It Kills Me by Melanie Fiona.

    She released her own album, The Best Of Me, in 1998, which had Let Me Return the Favor, which reached #82 on the Hot 100, and Share the Love, which had a club remix that peaked at #4 on the Dance charts.

    Her longtime partner Matias also sent out a touching tribute on Instagram, along with a throwback snap.

    ‘We went to school together & had no idea that soon after, we’d be brought together as partners, co-writers & friends through adulthood. She brought out the best in me & everyone she worked with. We laughed, cried, fought & loved hard,’ he added.

    ‘She was a blessing to everyone around her in ways no one will ever know. She taught me about life, love, loyalty & of course music. Her musical genius lives on in the songs she contributed to the soundtrack of all our lives. Laguardia High School Alumni. Phenomenal Singer/Songwriter. She was one of a kind.
