‘Slap in the face!’ Sadiq Khan gives himself virtual 10 percent pay rise to rake in £152K

The London mayor – who watched England’s dismal draw with Scotland at Wembley last night – took the voluntary cut last year after Covid struck. But it emerged yesterday that after being re-elected to run the capital in May for another three years he had upped his six-figure salary.

Mr Khan’s spokesman told the London Evening Standard: “The Mayor has always prioritised protecting frontline services during this pandemic and in June 2020 he volunteered to take a temporary 10 percent salary cut for an initial six months after it became clear that the Greater London Authority would need to make significant savings.

“The Mayor also froze the pay of his mayoral appointees during this period.”

His decision to cut his salary for 11 months saved the Greater London Authority (GLA) about £14,000.

He also froze the salaries of 15 direct appointments amid an “unprecedented financial black hole” that the GLA faced because of the pandemic.

“Let’s not forget that Sadiq Khan hiked his share of Londoners’ council tax bill by 9.5 percent because of the pandemic costs.”

The news came as the mayor was criticised for giving mixed messages about whether Scotland fans should come to London before last night’s Euro 2020 clash.

After the clash was announced in February, he urged UEFA to allow Scottish fans to travel to the game.

But he later backtracked and said Scottish fans should only come to the capital if they had a ticket.

He told LBC: “My message to those Scotsmen and Scotswomen who are in London already for the game is please, please, please, if you’ve not got a ticket to the game, try and book now for somewhere to watch the game tonight safely in a pub or a bar or restaurant.

“You can’t just rock up to a pub and see the game.”

He added: “To those who haven’t yet arrived, listen to this.

“Please don’t come to London unless you’ve got a ticket for the game or somewhere safe to watch it. Why?

“Because of covid and we’ve only got one fanzone and that’s limited to 750 people because of social distancing rules and those places have given up already to key workers.”

Following last night’s draw many Scottish fans totally ignored social distancing rules to party all night long.

The Met Police confirmed that they had arrested 30 people yesterday for a variety of offences including being drunk and disorderly.
