She first came to Australia’s attention during the 2000 series of the reality TV franchise Popstars.
But despite gaining notoriety as a pop singer on the show and in her subsequent girl group Bardot, Sophie Monk has admitted she’s not exactly comfortable in the genre.
‘I’m quite crap at pop, I don’t know why, I love listening to it but I’m not very good at singing it,’ the 41-year-old told Today Extra on Monday.

The Beauty and the Geek host has just released her first single in 17 years, titled Nice to Meet You.
Speaking of the song’s jazz influence, Sophie told hosts David Campbell and Belinda Russell she’s far more comfortable with the sound than that of her Bardot years.
‘I think people kind of expect me to do nightclub-y pop songs, but it wasn’t… I think it was more the record label back in the day made me that, even though I never went to a nightclub,’ she said.

‘I think this is where my voice fits better,’ added Sophie. ‘It was just fun to get in the studio, and everyone’s in lockdown, so I thought why don’t I work on this song and release it, and see if people like it?’
‘And if they don’t I won’t sing ever again, and if they do, great!’
Last Tuesday, Monk announced that she was making a comeback to the music scene, releasing her first single in 17 years.
‘It’s taken me years to be ready to release a song and this happened so organically for me, I felt like the time was right,’ she told Daily Mail Australia in a statement.

‘People know me originally as a singer in Australia, so it’s nice to be going back to my number one love,’ she continued.
Aptly titled Nice To Meet You, the new jazz-inspired single was written by Monk during her time in Melbourne filming The Masked Singer.
In the sultry song, Sophie’s raspy voice is heard singing the cryptic lyrics: ‘I’ve seen some things, that would make a grown man cry. So many things, that I have to leave behind. So complicated, but I prefer the simple life.’
Doing her own thing: ‘It’s taken me years to be ready to release a song and this happened so organically for me, I felt like the time was right,’ she told Daily Mail Australia in a statement
Sophie says for the first time in her musical career she feels like she is in complete control after deciding to release her new music independently via Ditto Music rather than a major record label.
‘I feel like I am in complete control and I’m just excited by the opportunity to be able to do this, I hope everyone enjoys the song it as much as I did recording it,’ she said.
In December last year, Sophie teased a brand new solo single on Instagram – one which sounds very different to her days in noughties girl band, Bardot.

She added that she’d recorded the soulful song in a bedroom with Gary Pinto, who has worked with artists including Guy Sebastian, Jimmy Barnes and Taylor Dayne.
‘The lyrics mean a lot to me. I only care what you guys think,’ she continued.

But her appearance was hit was some criticism, after Sophie’s former bandmate Tiffani Wood, 42, lashed out at her appearance on her Instagram page.
‘I thought Sophie was too busy for a Bardot reunion. I mean… she’s wearing a dragonfly costume, singing on a stage, while I have to try and get six kids to sleep before the show comes on,’ she wrote.
Bardot celebrated their 20th anniversary this year, and the band reunited for a series of media appearances to mark the occasion.
But Sophie was noticeably absent, and Daily Mail Australia understands she is keen to distance herself from the girl band.
