Strictly's Shirley Ballas reveals she is in talks to adapt her memoir for Broadway

Shirley Ballas has taken her ascent from Liverpool council estate to television star one dance step at a time. 

And there seems to be no stopping her rags-to-rumba story – with Broadway beckoning for the 61-year-old.

The Strictly judge and former competitive dancer is now in talks to take her memoir to the stage.

Behind The Sequins: My Life tells of how she was raised by her mother after her father left when she was two.

She told Cheltenham Literature Festival yesterday: ‘What’s really exciting, it’s been picked up for possible Broadway and West End. 

‘It’s in talks at the moment. So watch this space. Just the sheer fact that a producer in the United States has made an effort to get in touch. 

‘To give me an opportunity, a young girl from Leasowe with a single mother, to have the possibility to put this on a Broadway stage!’

Earlier this month, Shirley revealed she  almost quit her role of head judge after just one season due to the ‘stress of overnight fame’, according to reports.

The star replaced Len Goodman in 2017 however nearly left the coveted position one year later, explaining: ‘The mainstream fame which is handed to you by shows like Strictly has been quite hard to deal with,’ The Sun reports.

However after talking to her beloved mother Audrey, 84, she ‘eventually decided it would be OK to do it again.’

According to the paper, Shirley explained: ‘You have to be resilient when people start writing or saying unkind things about you.

‘When the producers asked me back for a second go, I asked my mother if she thought it was a good idea. It is invasive on your private life.’  

Shirley also revealed she wanted to take the role in a bid to take a stand against bullying in the industry.

‘To change that is what drove me to go for the job,’ the star explained.
