Thomas Tuchel comments spell out key difference between Chelsea and Man Utd in title race

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will be hoping to follow up last season’s Champions League triumph with a successful Premier League title bid at the second time of asking. The German boss will face stiff competition from the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City throughout the campaign, with the Blues set to be firmly in the hunt until the very end.

They scraped Champions League qualification with a third-placed finish before winning the competition last season, but look to be in an even better place after a fruitful summer transfer window.

The marquee signing of Romelu Lukaku will provide Chelsea with the additional firepower required to trouble the Red Devils, who have added their own new talisman in the form of five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

In terms of squad strength, the two clubs are similarly stacked with top-class players, but there could be one crucial difference to swing the title fight in favour of Chelsea this season.

The west London outfit have recent experience of winning silverware at the highest level after their successful Champions League campaign last time around.

Meanwhile, United have failed to add to their trophy cabinet since their Europa League triumph all the way back in 2017.

Tuchel underlined the importance of responding well to achieving success in his press conference on Monday, revealing that he has instilled a hungry mindset in his Chelsea squad since taking charge at the start of the year.

“When you do the last step, nothing compares to it,” the Blues boss told reporters.

“It really changes something for everybody, but the most important [thing] is not to look back, to keep the feeling and keep the hunger.

“That feeling creates a hunger for more and it’s addictive. In general, it’s about winning, this game. It’s about winning because winning changes your feelings, your atmosphere.

    DON’T MISS

“It changes it completely and gives you natural confidence. But at the same time, it’s absolutely necessary to forget it and to start from scratch to show this hunger and mentality again.

“This is what I feel and what I demand from myself and from everybody else around, that we don’t change in terms of hunger.

“We will have this experience [of winning the Champions League] together forever and we can create a bond out of it and we can create confidence out of it.

“But it is about looking in front and taking challenges which are coming, and the next step is tomorrow.”

Chelsea will begin their Champions League campaign against Zenit at Stamford Bridge this evening as they look to get their European title defence off to the perfect start.

They kicked off their Premier League journey with three wins over Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Aston Villa and a draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Meanwhile, United have achieved the same results and occupy top spot on goal difference ahead of the Blues, Liverpool and Everton, with all four clubs sitting on ten points.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils, who will be desperate to end their four-year barren spell this season, can pip Chelsea and City to the Premier League crown between now and next summer.
