Tones and I blasts the Victorian Government for announcing the Melbourne Cup will go ahead this year despite music events being shut down

Tones and I has criticised the Victorian Government for announcing the Melbourne Cup will go ahead this year despite the live music industry remaining shut down.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews will let up to 10,000 fully vaccinated spectators attend the Melbourne Cup on November 2 and Oaks Day on November 4 as part of a trial to test Covid transmission at large-scale events.

The 27-year-old singer, whose real name is Toni Watson, slammed the decision to allow thousands of punters to watch the race that stops the nation while music venues remain closed as a public safety measure.

‘Yeah, yeah, we get it! The Cup makes you heaps of money so you’re going to make it work, but we know that you would cop massive backlash if it went ahead without you giving the dying music industry a little carrot! F**K THIS!’ she wrote on Instagram.

    ‘Everyone sees what you’re doing!’

It’s comes after Mr Andrews announced 10,000 punters would be allowed to attend Melbourne Cup festivities as Victoria reported 1,890 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday.

He said the state was ‘well on track’ to hit the 70 per cent double vaccination target by October 26.

If Victoria hits 80 per cent double vaccination before November 4, then 10,000 punters will be able to attend Oaks Day on that date, and Stakes Day on November 7.

The revellers will be spread across five different zones at Flemington Racecourse and will be required to wear a mask and sit in an allocated seat.

Mr Andrews also announced double-vaccinated Melbourne residents will be able to attend a live music event on October 30 at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl to support long-suffering musicians.

While capacity for the event hasn’t been determined, ‘several thousand’ music lovers are expected to attend the outdoor event in just a few weeks time.

Smaller concerts will be held around the state towards the end of the year, dependent on advice from Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton.
