33 years after the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito comedy Twins hit theaters, the long-gestating sequel Triplets is finally happening with Tracy Morgan.

Morgan will play the long-lost triplet brother of Julian (Schwarzenegger) and Vincent (DeVito) in the sequel, with Twins director Ivan Reitman returning to the helm, via Deadline.

The sequel has become one of the hotter properties being shopped at the Toronto International Film Festival, with filming said to start this coming January in Boston.

The original 1988 comedy classic followed Schwarzenegger’s Julius Benedict, a physically perfect but socially naive man who finds his long-lost twin brother in DeVito’s Vincent.

Twins was the fifth highest-grossing movie of 1988, earning $111.9 million domestic and $216.6 million worldwide.

There had been talk for several years about Triplets, with Eddie Murphy originally slated to play the third triplet.

Reitman revealed in an interview with Deadline that the sequel ideal stemmed from Murphy meeting Schwarzenegger.

‘It was, “I should be a triplet, that could be a very funny comedy.” We started a script with Eddie, and after the success he had with Amazon Prime on he got himself booked up heavily,’ Reitman explained.

The director added they knew they were going to start production early next year, so he reached out to Tracy Morgan.

‘I’d been good friends with Tracy Morgan for a long time and always thought he was one of the funniest men in the world. I thought he would make a terrific triplet, and we rewrote the whole script for him. Now, we’ll go out and try and put the money together and get it made,’ Reitman added.

Universal Pictures made the original movie and had the rights to the sequel, but the original deal called for the rights to revert back to Reitman if the studio didn’t make the sequel in a certain amount of time, which has since passed.

The director added the premise follows the third baby who was born in secret and was never in touch with the siblings, though they form an early bond after meeting.

‘It’s really a film about family and, no matter how different we all are, we have to learn to get along. These guys have great chemistry together, and you can see that in the reel, and how much energy they bring out in each other,’ Reitman added.

This will be Reitman’s first directorial effort since 2014’s Draft Day starring Kevin Costner, but he has been keeping busy as a producer on Space Jam: A New Legacy and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by his son Jason Reitman.

Morgan is coming off Coming 2 America while Schwarzenegger has Kung Fury 2 coming up and DeVito just debuted The Survivor at the Toronto International Film Festival.
