University of Life! Coppers slam force for degree only recruitment campaign

In a post on its Facebook page, the force wrote: “Looking for a job which offers something different every day? Where nothing is predictable? Where you can lead investigations? Become a Detective with Thames Valley Police. If you hold a degree or are in your final year of your study in any field, our Detective DHEP programme could be for you.”

Disgruntled coppers were none too impressed about the police force’s preference for graduate only recruits and took to social media to let off steam.

Most pointed out that the ‘university of life’ would be a better qualification for detective work than an academic degree.

One wrote: “The degree in urban dance or medieval art will be a huge help I’m sure.

“How do you get to be an investigator without any cop experience?”

Another fumed: “So folk who have haven’t spent a single minute in uniform can get into CID just because they have a degree?

“Good Luck with that Thames Valley.”

While a third raged: “Total madness. You can teach the law, but you can’t teach experience.

“Direct Entry at Inspector and Superintendent rank – a recipe for disaster.”

For those without a degree, the career path towards becoming a detective requires a two year probationary period before they can apply to take the National Investigators Exam (NIE).

After passing the NIE, they can then enrol onto the Trainee Detective Constable (TDC) programme, according to information posted on the Metropolitan Police’s website.
