Utterly disgusting! Memorial to murdered teen Becky Watts vandalised with vile graffiti

The ‘Shine On’ lamp in Bristol was reportedly funded by the late 16-year-old’s college after she was killed and dismembered by her disturbed stepbrother and his partner in 2015. A plaque paying tribute to Becky is located on a box next to the lamp which reads: “In memory of Becky Watts 1998- 2015.

“Your light will always shine brightly. Let it provide safety and comfort to others.”

Despite it clearly being marked to the late teen, vandals disregarded the hurt it would cause to spray graffiti all over it.

One ‘tag’ read: “Hicab” while two other sides of the grey box were scrawled with illegible writing.

A local who regularly walks through Bristol’s St George’s Park noticed the vandalism.

“As if her family haven’t gone through enough pain – they’ve got to deal with this now.”

The 16-year-old was killed in February 2015 by her stepbrother Nathan Matthews and his girlfriend Shauna Hoare.

It was later discovered that the couple held disturbing sexual fantasies and intended to use Becky as a “sexual plaything”.

The teenager was suffocated in her bedroom in Bristol and stabbed 15 times in the abdomen after her death.

The pair then set about dismembering Becky’s body with a circular saw, packed the remains in plastic and salt, and hid them in a garden shed.

Matthews was later sentenced to 33 years and his girlfriend Shauna Hoare was given 17 years for manslaughter.

A 2020 report into her murder criticised agencies for a “lack of enquiry” into her “complicated” family.

The review by the Keeping Bristol Safe Partnership (KBSP) said Becky was a “vulnerable young woman with a difficult past” while Matthews and Hoare were “potentially vulnerable people with troubled and complicated backgrounds”.

Despite 16 agencies working with all three in the six years leading up to Becky’s death, it found that “none of the agencies” involved “knew of the connection between them”.

“Becky, Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare accessed a large number of services between them,” it said.

“All three had complex and traumatic experiences in their lives. The review panel agreed that for some of these services, inadequate account was taken of their histories.”
