Valtteri Bottas to Alfa Romeo confirmed as Mercedes 2022 seat freed up for George Russell

His job will be to help improve the fortunes of a team which has struggled this season, managing only three points so far after 13 races.

Only Haas, who are yet to score a point in 2021, have a worse record.

The identity of the driver who will be helping the Finn to achieve that goal remains a mystery. Antonio Giovinazzi could continue with the team, though there are rumours that he will be let go with the Italian team looking to field an all-new lineup in 2022.

Bottas has nine race wins in his 169 starts in F1, but is yet to stand on the top step of the podium this season.

With Red Bull breathing down Mercedes’ neck and a swathe of technical rule changes coming into force in 2022, the Silver Arrows need Hamilton to have a teammate who can win race when the seven-time world champion doesn’t.

Bottas has not managed to do so often enough, forcing Wolff into the tough decision to let him go.
