The new trailer for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad leaked ahead of schedule on Tuesday.

Warner Bros. publicly appeared to take the mistake with a grain of salt but quickly released the official preview on their official YouTube channel within hours of the leak.

An unlisted version of the trailer started making its way around the internet earlier in the day with the title ‘The Suicide Squad – Early Access Trailer Do Not Share’, according to Variety.

Director James Gunn – who jumped ship temporarily from Marvel for the DC Comics action film – joked on social media about the trailer being out ‘earlier than expected’ and tagged the film’s stars.

Warner Bros Canadian Twitter page responded back to the director laughing it off: ‘#TheSuicideSquad going rogue? Sounds about right. In other news, the sky is blue, Canada is still pretty good at hockey, and super-villains are generally not great at following the rules.’

And Warner Bros Brazil added: Oh, James! Are you telling me that @AliceBraga is involved? She promised me that she wouldn’t show to anyone…’

Warner Bros later released the trailer on their own official pages writing on YouTube: ‘Our only hope to save the world is a bunch of supervillains — what could go wrong?’

The trailer opens with Idris Elba as Robert DuBois who is imprisoned for ‘putting Superman in the ICU with a kryptonite bullet.’

‘I’m not joining your Suicide Squad,’ he says from inside Belle Reve – which is the dangerous prison that houses super-villains.

Elba has a tense standoff with Viola David in the clip over her meddling with his daughter (Storm Reid) while he is behind bars to force him on her team.

‘Are you in or out?’ Davis asks. When he agrees, she introduces the Squad.

‘Each member is chosen for his or her own completely unique set of abilities,’ she explains while flashes of the motley crew are peppered across the screen.

The Squad is comprised of ‘a collection of the most degenerate delinquents in the DC lineup,’ according to the logline.

‘Starfish is a slang term for a butthole,’ pipes up John Cena from a lecture hall. ‘Think there’s any connection?’

After an awkward pause – presumably for comedic effect – Davis deadpans: ‘No.’

‘No,’ Cena repeats while jotting it on a notebook.

The film was met with a polarizing critical response from both reviewers and the public. However, it raked in nearly $750 million at the box office, leading its producers to begin work on a sequel shortly after the flick’s release.

Although David Ayer served as the original feature’s director, Warner Bros. began searching for a new filmmaker to helm the second movie, and reportedly considered Ruben Fleischer, David S. Gordon and Mel Gibson, among others.

Gunn, 54, was eventually hired in 2018, and although he was initially hired to develop a new Superman film, he was allowed to switch projects and focus his creative energy on The Suicide Squad.
