'Wasting time talking about taking the knee' John Barnes hits out at 'empty gesture'

Speaking to GB News, John Barnes explained how people are “wasting their time” arguing over the gesture ‘taking the knee’. He highlighted how the argument “detracts” from the real issues of racism in the UK which he said are not being focused on enough. The ex-Liverpool legend called the public to move on from the argument and focus on what “can be done” to combat real “racial injustice and inequality”. His comments come as a row has blown up following the England football teams’ decision to ‘take the knee’ before their games at Euro 2020 which a small minority of England fans have opposed and booed due to the perceived links between the gesture and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Liverpool ace said: “Rather than talking about whether we should be taking the knee or not taking the knee.

“We should be talking about what is being done for racial injustice and inequality in the inner cities, knife crime.

“And we have to see something being done because we are not seeing anything.

“All we are seeing is the conversation as to whether we should be taking the knee or not.”

“And the longer this goes on the more it detracts from the real issues of what we are actually trying to do.

“Because what has happened in the last twenty years of passing the red card down the line in the champions league is that is all we are doing and nothing changes.

“So as I said, we are wasting time arguing whether we should take the knee or not.

“Rather than trying to do something about it.”

A fourth said: “Sport is sport. It’s not a political platform.

“I’m not against the gesture, but it’s a personal thing and I get how some people are getting fed up with it being pushed into everything.”

A small minority of England fans booed the England football team yet again as the Three Lions took the knee ahead of their clash with Croatia.

Despite the FA saying the gesture is not a political statement from players, some fans argue the gesture is overtly political given its links to the Black Lives Matter movement which some argue is a Marxist political movement.
