    ‘It was so pure’: Will Young discusses his Pop Idol experience and reveals he sings a medley of his hits to quieten down his niece and nephew in the car

    Will Young has branded Pop Idol ‘pure’ and ‘major’ almost twenty years since his first audition. 

    Speaking to Christine Lampard on Monday’s Lorraine, the singer, who is renowned for being the first winner of the worldwide Idol franchise, said: ‘[Pop Idol] was major. What was so lovely about it was that it was so pure. 

    ‘There hadn’t been a competition just for one singer where the contract was given to me by the public, not by the moguls and record companies. It was quite special.’

    The Leave Right Now hitmaker won Pop Idol in 2002 and revealed that the contestants all got on a bit ‘like a family.’

    He also disclosed that he spoke to runner-up Gareth Gates recently and he’s doing ‘really well.’  

    February next year will officially mark twenty years since Will won the inaugural series and his music career hasn’t slowed down, as his latest album Crying On The Bathroom Floor was released last week.

    The album is a collection of female pop covers – the star is a proud feminist and studied Women’s Studies at university. 

    The Wokingham-born singer also revealed to Christine the hilarious approach he uses to quieten his niece and nephew down in the car.

    ‘When I try to get my niece and nephew to be quiet in the car, I just sing a medley of my hits!’ he joked.

    As Christine began to laugh, Will continued: ‘And they’re like “please stop!”

    ‘I get to like, Changes, and then they behave.’

    Will has an impressive discography, including eight studio albums and 33 singles.
