William tipped to take Andrew's Royal Lodge as Duke 'thrusts monarchy into catastrophe'

On Monday Virginia Roberts, who alleged she was forced to have sex with Andrew aged just 17, filed a civil suit against the Prince in a New York court. She alleges she was made to have intercourse with the royal three times in 2001.

The strongly denies having any sexual contact with Ms Roberts.

According to the Daily Mail, senior royals are now discussing whether Andrew should keep Royal Lodge.

The prince lives in the 30-room property, only three miles from Windsor Castle, along with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson.

He took over the property, which had been used by the Queen Mother, in 2004.

Andrew has a 75-year lease on Royal Lodge, but there are questions over how sustainable this is now he’s stepped down from frontline royal duties.

Writing for MailOnline, leading royal expert Dan Wootton said: “As Prince Andrew thrusts the monarchy into another catastrophic scandal with Virginia Roberts suing him in a New York court for sex abuse, questions are being asked at the most senior levels of the Royal Family over whether he can retain his Royal Lodge home at Windsor.”

Speaking to the Daily Mail an insider said: “The ongoing personal scandal involving Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein is a source of much heartache for Charles and William who are trying to protect the future of the monarchy.

“There is now an active discussion at the most senior levels of the Royal Family about how Andrew can remain at the Royal Lodge, given the circumstances.

“It would make more practical sense too, given the size of the Cambridge family and the need for them to be close to London.”

If Andrew moves out of Royal Lodge it is unclear where he would end up living.

He was gifted Sunninghill Park, a mansion in Ascot, as a wedding present in 1986.

However in 2007 he sold the property to Timur Kulibayev, an ail and gas tycoon.

Epstein committed suicide in 2019, whilst awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

On Monday Ms Roberts released a statement to ABC News, stating: “I am holding Prince Andrew accountable for what he did to me.

“The powerful and the rich are not exempt from being held responsible for their actions.

“I hope that other victims will see that it is possible not to live in silence and fear, but one can reclaim her life by speaking out and demanding justice.”

Both Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, Andrew’s daughters, have moved out of Royal Lodge.

Speaking to the Mail, a royal insider insisted the Duchess of York lives at the property with her ex-husband.

They said: “Andrew and Sarah might try to argue that she is only a guest, but the reality is that she lives at Royal Lodge and has done so for some time.”
