The Duchess of York has lived an eventful life which has, at times, courted controversy. Descended from an aristocratic family, she married Prince Andrew on July 23, 1986. However, Fergie found life in the Royal Family far from being a “fairytale” and had to endure long absences from her husband due to his military career, which placed strains on their marriage.

The Duchess, 61, landed herself in hot water when compromising photographs of her in the company of her financial adviser, the Texan millionaire John Bryant, were published in the papers in 1992.

The Duke and Duchess of York separated later that year, before officially divorcing in 1996.

Fergie became entangled in further scandal after falling prey to a sting operation carried out by the News of the World in 2010.

She attempted to broker a meeting for £500,000 between an undercover reporter posing as a businessman and her former husband, Prince Andrew.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Sarah said she no longer felt constrained or defined by her past mistakes.

“I’m like an astronaut,” she told The Telegraph’s Camilla Tominey.

“The Duchess, Fergie… I carry these labels with me, they are always in my wardrobe – but this is me.

The novel is based on the life of her great-great-aunt, Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott, and has been 15 years in the making.

Fergie said writing the book had given her the chance to “tell my story of self-discovery”.

She added: “The main message I would like readers to take away from Margaret’s story is that no matter whether you make mistakes or get it all wrong, you keep going and fight for what you believe is your truth.”
