Barcelona have four players Man City may accept in Raheem Sterling swap transfer

Barcelona are reportedly still interested in bringing Manchester City star Raheem Sterling to the Nou Camp, and could make an offer in the January transfer window. The club’s precarious financial position means they will very likely have to make an offer of a player swap, with some huge talents potentially heading the other way.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona could make an offer to bring Sterling to La Liga this winter after a disappointing start to the season.

Ronald Koeman’s side was ravaged over the summer as he was forced to massively lower his wage bill, resulting in some huge exits.

But now Barca are looking to strengthen again by bringing in Sterling, having attempted to do so during the recent transfer window.

Express Sport looks at four possible options for Barcelona to include in a swap deal for Sterling.

    Sergi Roberto

One of the players on the table in the summer, Roberto could certainly be one of those to make way for Sterling.

City aren’t really in need of a new right-back, but Roberto can also play in central-midfield, making him a highly valuable asset.

The 29-year-old only has one year left on his contract, but is believed to be in talks over a new deal that would increase his value.

Barca fans booed Roberto during the 3-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League this week, reportedly leaving him very upset.

    Frenkie de Jong

With Fernandinho turning 37 before the end of the season, City are in need of a new general in the heart of their midfield.

And Holland international De Jong could be that man, with his impressive versatility allowing him to sweep up the loose balls and launch attacks with ease.

De Jong is the sort of player that loves to have possession, and slotting him into a Pep Guardiola team would be a match made in heaven.

The 24-year-old is arguably Barca’s most important player these days though, and it would take a lot to persuade Blaugrana chiefs to swap him for Sterling, unless cash was involved going the other way.

    Riqui Puig

A cheaper alternative to De Jong, Puig has generally played in a box-to-box role for Barcelona, having come through the club’s youth ranks.

Puig has looked incredibly comfortable playing at the top level for Barca over the last couple of seasons when given the chance to shine.

The 22-year-old was linked with an exit over the summer amid the mass exodus of players to lower the wage bill, but he was kept on for the time being.

But Puig doesn’t appear to be in Ronald Koeman’s first team plans at the minute, so could find solace elsewhere.

    Ousmane Dembele

Getting rid of Dembele for Sterling would be a controversial move, given the Frenchman’s whopping £135m price tag four years ago.

But the former Borussia Dortmund man has never really lived up to expectations in Catalonia, and the sale of Antoine Griezmann back to Atletico Madrid showed that previous fees don’t necessarily mean all that much.

It makes sense as a straight swap, but Barca aren’t exactly stacked for quality attacking players after losing Lionel Messi and Griezmann over the summer.

Dembele was one of those considered to be swapped in the summer, showing he is certainly not untouchable.
