Boris Johnson press conference: PM to unveil urgent Covid crisis plan as virus surges

The Prime Minister will unveil a series of measures he is prepared to take over the autumn and winter to help stop the NHS from becoming overwhelmed.

His blueprint will include plans for Covid booster jabs, as well as warnings some restrictions could be reintroduced if necessary.

The Government is determined to avoid needing to impose a new lockdown in the coming months and hope the measures that will be outlined today will help prevent the need to shut down vast parts of the economy.

No10 has said another lockdown remains an option as a “last resort” but say there are no plans to reimpose the “stay at home” order.

Instead, Mr Johnson will outline plans to offer all over-50s a third Covid jab – starting with the over 70s and the most vulnerable.

The shot of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine will be administered at least six months after the second dose amid concerns the protection it gives to older people fades over time.

Ministers received the final advice on the issue from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) before making the decision to roll out an extra injection.
