Covid R-rate soars but 'bulk' infected gives huge boost for UK vaccine strategy

Coronavirus cases have been found to have increased by 50 percent between May 3 and June 7, with the rate of infections doubling every 11 days amid concerns for the Delta (India) variant. But a study from React showed older age groups who have received one or both doses of the vaccine have proved to be more likely to be immune to the strain in a boost Britain’s vaccination efforts. Sky News reporter Charlotte Lomas said: “Some alarming figures there but the study authors are keen to stress we’re in a very different position now than where we were at previous periods of growth of this virus last spring and last autumn.

“What we’re finding now is that the bulk of Covid infections are among young people, children aged between 5 and 12 in particular and young adults aged between 18 and 24.

    “So the unvaccinated age groups.

“What we’re not seeing in the older age group is a rise in this Delta variant and that suggests they are ganging some immunity and protection by being fully vaccinated.”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock opened vaccination booking to the over-21s earlier this week as the Government announced plans to postpone the complete reopening of society until July 19.
