With the continued uncertainty of the safety of smart motorways, drivers are being urged to remain calm and safe on the roads this winter. In 2019, there were 117,536 reported accidents across the UK, all varying in severity.
With adverse conditions expected this winter, drivers are being warned of what steps to take in the event of a collision or accident.
It is important for drivers to know what they are doing in the event of an accident, both for their own safety, as well as their car insurance.
When involved in an accident, drivers should stop the car, no matter how minor it is.
They should then switch their hazard warnings lights on to warn other drivers, and are advised not to leave the motorway.

This includes insurance details, registration numbers, names and addresses, as well as details for anyone who witnessed the incident.
The more information the drivers have about the accident, the more helpful it will be when it comes to filing an insurance claim.
If police are involved in the incident, it is vital that the police incident number is noted as the insurer needs that information.
Sam Dawson, Head of Product (Car and Van) at Swinton Insurance, advised drivers never to say one thing to other drivers.
This should include photographing all vehicles involved, as well as marks left on the road or damage to lamp posts, bollards or the central reservation.
Swinton Insurance said it could also be useful to take photos of the weather or bad road conditions.
Most insurers require motorists to report any accidents, even if they don’t intend to make a claim, so drivers should be sure to inform their provider as soon as possible.
They will generally ask for all of the details of the crash, including the information the driver took from the other people involved.
It is also dependent on the type of insurance the driver has, the insurers may be able to provide drivers with onward travel following an accident, or potentially even a courtesy car.
