Fred Sirieix has admitted he was ‘worried’ for his daughter Andrea after being unable to travel to Japan to watch her compete for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics.

The First Dates star, 49, said on Monday’s Lorraine that he’s ‘so proud’ of his daughter he ‘has to pinch himself,’ despite fears around the competition due to the Covid pandemic.

After Andrea finished in seventh place in the women’s 10m diving final, Fred said: ‘I’m so proud I have to pinch myself sometimes. She works so hard she is the seventh best female diver in the country and to watch her at the Olympics.’

‘But when she jumps from that height it is scary, it is very high, it is not normal,’ he admitted.

‘She has that single mindedness of a champion, she has a champion mindset but at the end of the day it is nothing to do with her mum or myself – it is her.

‘She is very dedicated to her diving and her school, she had incredible GCSE results so it is just win-win all round for her.’

Fred’s daughter was the youngest diver in team GB and was presented with the Young Sports Personality of the Year award on Blue Peter last December.

‘Love is such a basic and simple need, just like breathing air and drinking water. If you are bored of love, you’re bored of life and that’s why we love first dates because it means so well.’

He added: ‘This is what you do in the restaurant business, you have to make people feel welcome. But in this show, it’s like their last hope and they trust us and trust is the basis of love.

‘If you don’t give that trust to ensure people can succeed, it’s not going to work.’

He also said: ‘When it works it’s high fives all around and that’s why people come to the restaurant because they think it’s going to work so we have a responsibility.’

‘Some people are shy, they lack confidence so they rely on us so it’s up to us to deliver.’

‘When people come to the First Dates restaurant, they want us to find that person and we want to find it and they trust us so much.’
