The monarch, 95, was seen being driven from Windsor Castle earlier today to the airport for her annual Scottish break. The Queen wore a turquoise outfit and a pair of sunglasses as she sat in the back of a Range Rover.

Is it Her Majesty’s first summer at Balmoral Castle without her beloved husband.

The Duke of Edinburgh died peacefully in April just months before his 100th birthday.

Every year, the Queen spends the summer at Balmoral where she is joined by other members of the Royal Family.

The royals are likely to rally around the monarch as she faces the holiday in the Scottish Highlands without Philip.

“Like him the Queen is very practical and pragmatic, and she knows he would support her getting out and about.”

Royal expert Richard Kay also said the monarch was honouring an agreement she made with Philip with her radiant recent appearances.

Writing in the Daily Mail, the royal expert said: “The two had often discussed how each would cope without the other at their side, and it boiled down to this: whoever was left should mourn, but not for too long, then enjoy what remained of their life.”

The royals observed a two-week period of mourning following the Duke’s death.

Since then, the monarch has been stepping out for engagements and events.

And next year, the Queen celebrates her Platinum Jubilee marking 70 years on the throne.
