Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola declared that James Milner should have been sent off during his side’s draw with Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, insisting that the Reds and Manchester United can get away with favourable refereeing decisions when playing at home. The points were ultimately shared at Anfield, with both teams missing the opportunity to go into the international break as Premier League leaders.
Liverpool struggled to get going in the first half, with City enjoying the upper hand until the interval.
However, the Reds drew first blood on the hour mark through Sadio Mane, who finished off a sweeping team move to put his side ahead.
They were pegged back by Phil Foden before Mohamed Salah restored Liverpool’s advantage with a stunning finish.
The hosts looked set to claim all three points before Kevin de Bruyne’s late equaliser forced a draw, with the Belgian’s effort taking a signficant deflection on its way past Alisson Becker.
Liverpool were somewhat fortunate to finish the game with all 11 players still on the pitch, with James Milner escaping a second booking after a foul on Foden went unpunished.
Guardiola was highly critical of the decision after the final whistle, claiming that a City player would have been dismissed for the same challenge if the shoe was on the other foot.
“It’s a yellow card. It’s a yellow card. It’s clear,” the Spaniard told Sky Sports.
“It’s Anfield, it’s Old Trafford. In our situation a City player is sent off. It’s too much clear. It was a second yellow.”
