Following her resignation on Thursday, Liz Truss became the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history after taking over from Boris Johnson on September 6. The outgoing Prime Minister addressed the nation saying: “I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability.

“Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills.

“I recognise, though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.

“I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”

Speaking on Newsnight, Ms Boateng argued against the notion “that there are no quality politiciands in high office”.

“The step from every single senior Cabinet job to Prime Minister is one which is almost unfathomable.”

Addressing Ms Hazarika, she noted that former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown “couldn’t do it” despite his vast experience as a top politician.

The ex-Labour advisor appeared bemused as she hit back: “If you are comparing Liz Truss to Gordon Brown, that’s like comparing a Rolls Royce to a Skoda.”

The former Tory special adviser continued: “The challenging thing for a lot of roles including senior special adviser roles, you don’t know you’re good at them until you get them.

Writing for the i, she added that Truss’s leadership was “one of the most calamitous tenures at Downing Street in history” and “anyone with half a brain cell could see that Truss wasn’t up to the job, which begs the question: why was she ever allowed anywhere near Downing Street?”

She noted that the Conservative leadership since Brexit has been “the march of the talentless, unquestioning, loyalist”.

“Talent, ability, decency, competence, and a curious mind are no longer important, sacrificed at the altar of blind devotion and dodgy dogma”, she said.
