Paulo Fonseca can make three dream January signings if Newcastle bring in Portuguese boss

Newcastle United parted ways with Steve Bruce on Wednesday morning and have been tipped to replace him with former Roma manager Paulo Fonseca. Bruce made his exit with the Magpies languishing second bottom of the Premier league table and three points from safety.

Fonseca was close to taking the top job at Tottenham last season before the north London club apparently pulled out over concerns about his attacking style of football.

But that football ideology will be music to the ears of the Newcastle supporters, who voiced their disapproval of Bruce’s conservative tactics throughout his tenure.

If Fonseca does take over at Newcastle, he could well look to raid his former club if he’s handed a blank chequebook to bring in new faces.

And Express Sport looks at three dream signings the Portuguese could make.

    Gianluca Mancini

Despite his desire to play attacking football, Fonseca would need to shore up Newcastle’s leaky defence upon arrival in the north east.

Newcastle have conceded a league-high 19 goals this season and haven’t kept any clean sheets.

Fonseca was the man who took Gianluca Mancini to Roma after initially agreeing a loan deal for the centre-back with Atalanta two years ago, before making the deal permanent in 2020.

Mancini is a regular for Roma and he reportedly wants to sign a new contract at the club.

But the promise of a big-money deal and the prospect of working with Fonseca once again could well turn the 25-year-old’s head.

    Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Henrikh Mkhitaryan will already be well-known to Premier League fans, having previously had spells with Manchester United and Arsenal.

    Carles Perez

Carles Perez arrived at Roma last summer after Fonseca persuaded club chiefs to sign the player from Barcelona.

The winger hasn’t quite hit the heights expected of him in Italy and has been in and out of the team.

This season he has started just one Serie A game under Jose Mourinho and could jump at the chance to move to the Premier League.

Perez came through the Barcelona youth system after signing from Espanyol as a teenager and has the technical ability to light up the Premier league and help Newcastle finally move away from the bottom of the table.
