Royal Family LIVE: Meghan using her title dubbed 'wrong' in US meddling row

Last month, the Duchess of Sussex, 40, wrote a letter – signed with her Duchess title – to the US Congress where she called on Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Leader Charles Schumer for paid leave for parents. Reports have emerged in recent days that Meghan has also been calling US senators on the issue and using her royal title in the process.

Senator Shelley Moore Capito, the West Virginia Republican, told Politico that she had received an unexpected call from the Duchess, she explained: “I’m in my car. I’m driving. It says caller ID blocked. Honestly … I thought it was Sen. Manchin. His calls come in blocked. And she goes ‘Sen. Capito?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ She said, ‘This is Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.’”

While many fans took to social media to praise the former US actress for campaigning on the initiative, others questioned her title usage.

These include royal fan @royallybrittany who called out Meghan for involving herself in political issues using her title, deeming it “wrong” to use it to “influence policy” in the US.

The user wrote: “Meghan Markle the American citizen can call senators all day long it’s her right as an American but Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex has no place meddling in US politics. The use of her title to influence policy here in America is WRONG! Whether I agree with her stance or not.”

Other American citizens backed up the rebuff of Meghan’s title usage, including @emilyruiz who wrote “I am American. I agree with you 100%” and @GordonLissett who added: “Exactly! Here in America we don’t have Royalty, so her position means NOTHING HERE. I wish she would realize that.”
