Ryan Gosling reveals how the pandemic impacted his two children… and the gift Eva Mendes got him for his very first Father’s Day

Ryan Gosling has revealed how the pandemic impacted his two children and the symbolic gift his partner of 10 years, Eva Mendes, got him for his very first Father’s Day in 2014.

‘Our kids are young, so it was a tough time for them to be separated from other kids and not being able to see family and whatnot,’ Gosling, 40, said in an interview with GQ.

He continued to say: ‘We did our best to entertain them. I think Eva and I did more acting in quarantine than we have in our whole careers.’

Ryan and Eva first met while filming The Place Beyond The Pines in 2011 and share two daughters: Esmeralda, seven, and Amada, five, but keep their family life very private.

Following the birth of their daughter Esmeralda, Mendes gifted the actor a watch to remind him that he was ‘on the clock now.’

Speaking of becoming a spokesperson for TAG Heuer – his first ever partnership – Gosling said he thinks about the notion of ‘time’ as the father of two children.

‘I think about time more than I used to. I have two kids and they’re growing up fast. So I keep my eye on the clock more than I used to,’ he shared.

After the interviewer seconded the notion and said his partner was expecting, The Notebook star said: ‘For my first Father’s Day, Eva gave me a watch.’

Asked about the brand of the watch he quipped: ‘The brand doesn’t matter. The symbol was what mattered. It meant, you’re on the clock now.’

In the chat Gosling continued to divulge that he’s always ‘been a fan’ of watches, dating back to childhood and recalled that his first watch was a Hulk Hogan Casio.

‘I guess I thought they sort of symbolized having important things to do and people to see. Just generally having a life, which I wanted to have.

‘I wanted to have one of those. So I bought a Hulk Hogan Casio. Nothing says you have important things to do like the Hulk Hogan Casio,’ he recalled laughing.

The Golden Globe winner also revealed that the hardware alters the way he thinks of and portrays characters on screen.

‘I’ve used them as a way to communicate things about characters that I’ve played. In some cases, they’ve kind of become characters of their own in the films.’
