Steps icon Ian ‘H’ Watkins has revealed he used the same surrogacy team as Elton John to start a family.

In a candid new interview the singer, 45, told how Elton and his husband David Furnish were the ‘only gay parents he knew at the time’ and after many years of failed attempts he and ex-husband Craig welcomed twin boys Macsen and Cybi in 2016.

Ian also spoke about how he had previously got quite far down the line with the adoption process but pulled out at the last minute, claiming the team were homophobic.

Speaking on Giovanna Fletcher’s Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast he opened up about the ‘minefield’ of surrogacy.

Asked if advice was readily available he said: ‘Not really and the only reference when I started to you know do a lot of research was David and Elton.

‘They were the only gay parents that I knew so after you know years and years of having meetings with surrogates and agencies, it’s a minefield G.

‘It’s you know there’s egg donors I know more about women’s menstrual cycles than women it’s crazy. But you know after a long road we actually worked with the same team that Elton and David worked with and then after many many years of failed attempts and different situations we ended up with twins.’

Elton shares his two boys with husband David. The couple have been together since 1993 and welcomed Zachary via surrogate in December 2010, followed by younger brother Elijah, who was born in 2013 via the same surrogate.

He then went on to describe the adoption process he had gone through years before, claiming the team were homophobic.

The star explained: ‘When I started looking into fatherhood I was with somebody at the time and we actually went down the adoption route very very early on. We’re talking maybe 15 years ago now really and we went quite far down the process.

‘I have never told anybody this actually so we went far quite far down the process. We did all the training courses we met with social workers and it turned out that part of the team that we were working with was actually homophobic and that’s why we never got any further with the process.’

Elsewhere in the interview Giovanna asked if he had always wanted to be a dad to which he answered: ‘It was something I always dreamed of. I always had that paternal instinct, but I never thought it was possible.

‘I tried many different routes before I ended up with, I was going to say these perfect little packages but they’re not perfect!’

Ian had an acrimonious split from Craig Ryder in 2017, after a decade together.

Sadly the split came just one year after the couple had welcomed their twin sons.

Ian was been branded a ‘bully’ by his ex-partner Craig, as the pair went through a bitter court battle over a Range Rover.

In January 2019, Ian sued his former flame over the vehicle, and also claimed he had loaned Craig £15,000 to purchase the car.

Craig reportedly insists the money was a gift, as he labelled Ian a ‘financial bully’ who had ‘deleted him’ from his life.

Speaking at the City of London County Court to Judge Edward Bailey, Craig said: ‘I would never take a loan. We had been together for many years and we have children together.

‘I wouldn’t have accepted a loan and I needed a car. Mr Watkins has completely played the financial card for the last two years.

‘If you had said to me five years ago that this is where I would be now, I would never have believed you.’

Ian and Craig welcomed their twin sons in March 2016, but split in late 2017 after being together for ten years.

They first began sharing their wishes to start a family back in 2011, but suffered a heart-breaking loss in 2012 when their first surrogate miscarried.

In December 2015, they revealed their second shot at parenthood when they shared the news with fans in an uplifting animated video.

Ian rose to fame as part of nineties pop group Steps alongside bandmates Faye Tozer, Claire Richards, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee, who reunited in January 2017.
